Designing Courses for Twenty-first Century Learners

In this full-day seminar, you will engage in peer review and hands-on exercises to articulate a teaching philosophy statement, write clear and realistic course objectives, map out a syllabus and course schedule that supports 21st century student-centered learning, and discuss issues related to the selection and development of supporting course materials. Bring a current curriculum description or draft syllabus and core teaching materials (e.g., text) to work with during the seminar.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe techniques and methods for becoming a reflective teacher.

  • Recommend best practices and pedagogies in teaching 21st century learners in higher education.

  • Articulate a teaching philosophy statement that is reflective and represents a personally refined pedagogy.

  • Explain the roles of reading, writing, discussion, application, and assessment in the 21st century student-centered classroom.

  • Develop a course syllabus that is consistent with program and department goals and represents best practices for 21st century learners.

  • Produce a student-centered outline, map or course schedule.

  • Recognize intellectual property rights in the selection and creation of course materials.
