Strategies for Teaching Online

Today's online technologies allow us to easily post a syllabus, class handouts, or web links as supplements to face-to-face classes. In this course, the focus is on moving from posting documents and readings to teaching and active learning online, developing rich discussions and learning activities that engage students. Special issues such as teaching students with disabilities or using copyrighted materials will also be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the variety of instructional models, characteristics, instructor roles and differences between web-supported, web-enhanced, hybrid/blended, and fully online teaching.

  • Discuss issues involved in converting face-to-face courses and course materials to online delivery.

  • Promote high levels of student engagement and interaction in online teaching.

  • Explore tips and best practices for handling many online teaching and learning tasks.

  • Determine the steps needed to make course materials accessible to online students with disabilities.

  • Specify the additional copyright rules that govern online course materials. Laws that apply to online materials are quite different from those that apply to face-to-face classes.
