Teaching Large Classes

Learner-centered teaching strategies may require creative adaptations when employed in larger classes (40 or more). This course will focus on challenges, such as monitoring, attendance, encouraging and managing participation, adapting collaborative activities for large groups, and incorporating learning activities that encourage a high level of critical thinking and student engagement. Special design issues such as the impact of the instructor's philosophy or teaching style will also be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify one's own teaching philosophy and style that might affect the course design decisions for larger classes.

  • Develop a lesson plan that employs learner-centered strategies effective for a large class (40 or more).

  • Develop learning activities that promote student engagement, critical thinking and reflection in larger classes.

  • Assess the effectiveness of a large class teaching strategy.
