Test Writing

This course will assist instructors write and critique exams appropriate for stated learning outcomes. Using actual course examinations, participants will analyze the relationship among exam questions, levels of learning and anticipated outcomes of learner-centered courses. Issues of reliability, validity, question difficulty and discrimination will also be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the attributes of a fair and valid exam.

  • Utilize a test blueprint to evaluate the relationship among exam questions, expected levels of learning and course content.

  • Develop test items to measure student learning based on learning outcomes.

  • Evaluate an exam item for validity, reliability, difficulty and discrimination.

  • Acknowledge issues related to learner-centered student assessment and the testing environment.
